D-2/CR12MOV
D2 / Cr12MoV Steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel known for its excellent wear resistance, high hardness, and good dimensional stability. It is widely used in industries where tools and dies need to withstand heavy pressure, abrasion, and repeated use at room temperature. D2 steel is commonly used in Western standards, while Cr12MoV is the Chinese equivalent grade with similar properties and applications. Because of its strong alloy composition, this steel can maintain sharp edges and resist deformation during long production cycles.
D2 / Cr12MoV steel typically contains high levels of carbon and chromium, along with molybdenum and vanadium, which improve hardness, toughness, and wear resistance. After proper heat treatment, the steel can reach a hardness of around 58–62 HRC, making it suitable for heavy-duty tooling. Due to its excellent performance and durability, D2 / Cr12MoV steel is widely used in the manufacturing of cutting tools, stamping dies, cold forging dies, shear blades, punches, rolling dies, and industrial knives. It is commonly applied in industries such as automotive, metal processing, machinery manufacturing, and tool making, where strong and long-lasting tool materials are required.
Main characteristics and applications
Alloy and Steels Supplies and Stocks HCHCR D-2/CR12MOV steel in India and abroad. D-2/CR12MOV steel is an air hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel.
APPLICATION
Applications of D-2/CR12MOV steels include thread rolling, blanking or forming dies operating at temperatures below 482°C (900°F).
HEAT TREATMENT
D-2/CR12MOV steels should be preheated very slowly up to 815°C (1500°F), then temperature should be increased to 1009°C (1850°F) and held for 20 to 45 minutes. Then they are air quenched.
FORGING
Forging of D-2/CR12MOV steels can be done at 1065°C (1950°F) down to 1750°F. Do not forge below 926°C (1700°F).
ANNEALING
Annealing of D-2/CR12MOV steels should be done at 886°C (1627°F) followed by slow furnace cooling at 4°C (40°F) per hour or less.
TEMPERING
D-2/CR12MOV steels can be tempered at 204°C (400°F) for achieving Rockwell C hardness of 61 and at 537°C (1000°F) for a Rockwell C hardness of 54.
